GUID Conversion

This option is available on the MAKEMSI "start" menu.

The shortcut allows you to easily convert between MSI formatted GUIDs and a "mangled" form which is used internally by Windows Installer (in the registry etc). The MSI GUID "{A638BC3B-72C3-4EEF-90DD-0683232E396C}" has a mangled form of "B3CB836A3C27FEE409DD603832E293C6".

You are prompted for a GUID, you can supply one in either format and pressing ENTER will convert and display the result. Supply an empty string or press "Cancel" to close the dialog.

An example:

See the "Registry Usage" section for other useful information.

I believe further encoded versions of these "mangled" GUIDS (for "ProductCode" and component codes) are used in the "repair" strings known as "Darwin Descriptors".
