This "SysInternalsLink failed validation at 24 Jun 2008. #301 - PERMANENT move to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx This appears to be a recent problem as I am not yet monitoring the URL." tool allows you to see file activity which is very useful for diagnosing cryptic error messages.

The following screen dump shows the capture of one of the millions of "MAKECAB.EXE" bugs (it tries to create a cab file with an invalid filename):

In the above I had filtering turned on so I only saw MAKECAB.EXE file activity and only failures. I also made the window very small so it didn't take up too much space.
